Complexity And Public Policy

Our Complexity and Public Policy Guide for Kenyan Youth is designed to enable youth to acquire the skills to apply their knowledge of complexity to policy design.

It broadly defines their role as important stakeholders in the policy-making landscape and equips them to participate as active citizens and social change agents. The topics covered in this guide are introduction to public policy, importance of public participation in policy-making, applications of complexity in policy design, categories of policy, stages of policy-making, policy process rules, devolution and stakeholder mapping.

SAYDS - Projects

Coming into the program, we were focused on helping the girls by providing enough sanitary towels that was affecting their attendance in school and ultimately their academic performance. Having gone through the SAYDS program, we saw our program shift to actually tackle more than just the need for sanitary towels.  We as a youth group are now equipped with complex systems thinking which saw us changing how we tackle the social problem we were handling. We realized that there has been a decline in adolescent girls completing their elementary education.

We decided to focus on mental health as a concept and actually help devise ways of making sure one is aware of their mental health state. Instead of focusing on mental health disorders as is the norm. We found it important for everyone to know what their mental state is. We started off wanting to start off by sharing daily facts on our personal pages and talking to our friends about it.

We sort to bridge the education gap between young people and money. So many avenues are rising allowing the youths to make money through different gigs. Unfortunately they invest in short pleasures and forget about future investments and planning. There is a need for financial literacy and management.

We chose to focus on Jericho Lumumba. Being residents of this area we are faced with the challenge of finding better jobs for the youth. Most of Jericho residents live in extreme poverty, earning less than a dollar a day. Unemployment rates are high, especially among youth.
