Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV)

Group 5 is dedicated to addressing the pervasive issue of Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the informal settlements of Nyalenda in Kisumu County. SGBV cases, particularly domestic violence and rape, are alarmingly high in Kisumu County, exceeding national averages. For instance, domestic violence rates are 8.7% compared to the national figure of 8.3%, and rape cases are at 35.9% versus the national figure of 24.6%. Data from the Gender-Based Violence Recovery Centre (GBVRC) at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu indicated that the center has supported over 1,161 survivors of sexual violence, of whom 80.7% were girls, 17.4% women, 1.6% boys, and 0.3% men.

By focusing on the SAYDS Program, we identified several action points within the system to effectively address the escalation of SGBV cases in our community. Our project aims to create a safe community where girls and women can realize their potential without the threat of SGBV. This involves promoting awareness of SGBV and improving health services for survivors, with a focus on screening and medical reports used for legal redress. Our approach includes capacity development for policymakers, healthcare workers at the GBVRC, and community members on SGBV reporting and referral mechanisms. We also emphasize social accountability and participation in budget-making processes to ensure gender-responsive budgets.

Community involvement is at the heart of our efforts. We aim to foster safe neighborhoods for girls, teenage mothers, and women through comprehensive community engagement and empowerment. By collaborating with local stakeholders, including policymakers, healthcare providers, and community leaders, we strive to build a supportive and responsive environment

for SGBV survivors. Our programs include capacity-building workshops, awareness campaigns, and initiatives to improve the accessibility and quality of health services for SGBV survivors.

Through systems thinking, we seek to address the root causes and systemic factors contributing to SGBV in Nyalenda. Our goal is to create sustainable change, ensuring that the community becomes a safer place where girls and women can thrive free from the threat of sexual and gender-based violence.
